چکیده

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the NASA Earth Observing System satellites Terra and Aqua include infrared bands that are designed for the accurate measurement of sea-surface temperature (SST). In addition to the conventional ‘split-window’ bands in the 10-12 μm atmospheric window (similar in spectral properties to the corresponding channels of the heritage instrument, the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR)) the MODIS also has three bands in the 3.5 to 4.2 μm interval for SST measurement. Here we present a validation of the MODIS SSTs, derived from the conventional measurements at the 10-12 μm window, by comparison with radiometrically-derived skin temperatures from ships, and with bulk measurements from buoys. These show the MODIS SSTs are comparable in accuracy to the AVHRR Pathfinder SST fields.

Pan-Arctic lead detection from MODIS thermal infrared imagery

Polynyas and leads are key elements of the wintertime Arctic sea-ice cover. They play a crucial role in surface heat loss, potential ice formation and consequently in the seasonal sea-ice budget. While polynyas are generally sufficiently large to be observed with passive microwave satellite sensors, the monitoring of narrow leads requires the use of data at a higher spatial resolution. We apply...

Variability of clouds and water vapor in low latitudes: View from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS)

[1] This paper shows a small sampling of the atmospheric fields provided by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), which is installed on both the Terra and Aqua satellites of the Earth Observing System. These fields include macroscale fields like cloud fraction, cloud top pressure, cloud optical depth, and column water vapor, and microscale fields like cloud particle effecti...

Snow and ice products from Suomi NPP VIIRS

[1] The Visible Infrared Imager Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) instrument was launched in October 2011 on the satellite now known as the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership. VIIRS was designed to improve upon the capabilities of the operational Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer and provide observation continuity with NASA’s Earth Observing System’s Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradi...

Comparison between in situ and MODIS-derived spectral reflectances of snow and sea ice in the Amundsen Sea, Antarctica

The spectral albedo and directional reflectance of snow and sea ice were measured on sea ice of various types, including nilas, grey ice, pancake ice, multi-year pack ice, and land-fast ice in the Ross, Amundsen and Bellingshausen seas during a summer cruise in February through March 2000. Measurements were made using a spectroradiometer that has 512 channels in the visible and near-infrared (V...

Data Assimilation of the High-Resolution Sea Surface Temperature Obtained from the Aqua-Terra Satellites (MODIS-SST) Using an Ensemble Kalman Filter

We develop an assimilation method of high horizontal resolution sea surface temperature data, provided from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS-SST) sensors boarded on the Aqua and Terra satellites operated by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), focusing on the reproducibility of the Kuroshio front variations south of Japan in February 2010. Major concerns...
